Top 5 Black Paint Colors

Painting our office doors opened me up to the world of black paints. There are so many to choose from and at times, not much variation. I’ve rounded up my favorites including some bold tones, blacks that play well with warm or cool hues and some choices that are a tad softer but still very much black.

Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams: The color we painted our doors! This was recommended by a friend from high school who called it the ‘perfect black’, and I’d have to agree. No strings attached, no undertones, just your bold black. Tricorn Black works great for trim and doors because it packs a punch. It also plays well with Railings by Farrow & Ball, which is the color our built ins are painted (you can see them if you look in through the doors from the outside) because of its neutral nature.

Black Beauty by Benjamin Moore: One of my favorites for exteriors. This matte black is still rich in color but not too bold. As a warmer black, it pairs well with wood trim and cozy spaces. It is extremely versatile and shines especially in spaces with natural sunlight.

Jet Black by Benjamin Moore: This is a bold, deep black that pairs well with cooler tones or stark whites. It adds contrast and drama to any space. Works well on interior doors, trim and cabinets.

Onyx by Benjamin Moore: If you are looking for a softer black, this is your color. It’s a step down from more traditional blacks, which make it a great option for larger walls both indoors and outdoors. This tone is still dark and adds drama without too much punch.

Black Magic by Sherwin Williams: Another great neutral, dark, contrasty black. Black magic has minimal undertones however when compared to Tricorn Black, this may be a touch warmer and softer. Also a great choice for trim, doors, shutters and outdoor blacks.
